Arenal volcano

Arenal volcano erupted suddenly in 1968 after being dormant for almost 400 years. Since then it has been one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes  with spectacular flowing lava that has attracted lots of tourists to the area.

Unfortunately the activity ceased about two years ago, but the perfectly cone shaped volcano still provides a spectacular view.

We went for for a hike in the national park next to the volcano. The ground still contains black ashes where the lava once flowed. It is incredible to see how fast the forest has re-grown.

After our hike we had time to enjoy the forest canopy from a birds eye view. We zip lined between different platforms and ended the adventures with a high and scary abseil (at least some of us did:)

The perfect ending to our active day was visiting one of the many hot springs in the area. The water from the hot springs is naturally heated from the volcano.
