Bird Watching

To spot birds you have to be very patient and an early riser. We spent the night in a cozy cabin in the mountains to be able to spot a Quetzal at sun rise.

The Quetzal is not just any ordinary bird. It has dazzling colors and the male bird has a long beautiful tail that attracts the females. It was the most culturally important bird for both Maya and the Aztecs because of it's fantastic feathers. We had almost given up hope (maybe not patient enough) when the guide spotted a male Quetzal with it's long tail sitting silently in a tree just a few meters away from us. The colors of the bird were so vibrant that it almost made us think that it couldn't be real.
